Concept
Tropical Concrete Sanctuary explores the intersection of hard and soft. It is a spa-like retreat that reimagines Brutalism through warmth, sculpture, color, and tropical ease. Designed as an antidote to overstimulation, the home transforms concrete from something cold into something meditative and full of life. Each surface invites touch, light, and a sense of grounded calm.
Design Philosophy
This home blends Soft Brutalism with tropical modernism. It is a sculptural, concrete-based space softened by tropical light, natural textures, and sun-washed tones of green, blush, and warm neutrals. The design is clean, expressive, and built for calm, intentional living.
Spatial Strategy
Custom monolithic built-ins define the spatial rhythm. Sculptural walls and continuous surfaces create a seamless flow between rooms, removing visual clutter. The design emphasizes low lines, organic shapes, and integrated storage, blending function and form into one continuous landscape.
Material Palette
A study in texture and tonality
Primary: microcement in warm Roman clay tones,
replacing the cold standard gray of concrete
Accents: colorful zellige tile, sculptural heavy wood, linen,
durable velvet, rattan, and handwoven textiles
Color: tropical greens and corals with pops of burnt orange, deep magenta,
and matte black appliances
Finish: a balance of matte and glossy breathable coatings for a tactile, organic feel
Wellness and Sustainability
The home is designed for low-toxin, low-maintenance living, supporting mental clarity and physical wellbeing. Organic fabrics, microcement, and sustainable woods reflect a philosophy of simplicity that nurtures both space and spirit.
Influence
Inspired by my experience as a Senior Graphic Designer for SKKN by Kim, the project translates the brand’s sculptural minimalism into livable architecture. It asks what if the serenity of a skincare brand could be experienced as a home. Tropical Concrete Sanctuary reimagines that ethos through texture, tropical air, and light, making minimalism feel warm and spa-like.
